Peter was one of the cornerstones and champions of the international wheel gymnastics community from the beginning.
In summer 1990 he took part in the first International Wheel Gymnastics Training Camp in Finnentrop/Germany and was a co-founder of the IRV’s predecessor, FIRR.
Peter put his heart and soul into his involvement as coach and organiser at all the camps in the years that followed, in Italy, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Finland, Denmark and especially in the Netherlands, always alongside his wife, Johanna.
He became Vice President of the IRV when it was founded in 1995 and stayed in this position for almost twenty years.
Peter was a fair and highly motivating collaborator at all subsequent European and World Championships, often initiating new paths for us to take. He not only ensured progress and success for the IRV, but also for wheel gymnastics clubs in The Netherlands.
For many years, one of his special interests was the production of innovative bindings that he developed himself and made by hand. These binding have become indispensable for many athletes to this day.
He and his wife passed on their skills at countless international workshops where happy new owners were able to make their own “De Jong” bindings.
Peter’s well thought-through and future-oriented visions and advice, as well as his infectious and admirable energy for our sport (in recent years even from a distance), will be sorely missed, as will be his calm demeanour and characteristic sense of humour.
We will remember Peter with great gratitude and many good memories.
We send our deepest sympathy to his wife Johanna and all members of his family.
