Pre-Announcement Gym Wheel Code of Points 2026

Dear Wheel Gymnastics Community,

We have a heads up to share with you regarding the Gym Wheel Code of Points. An updated version of the Code of Points will be released within the next few weeks to come into effect in January 2026.

The changes are important but will have limited impact on gymnasts’ preparation for the next world championships.

Following the 2024 World Championships in Almere, we received a lot of feedback regarding inconsistencies, loopholes and other challenges associated with the Code of Points. Due to compounding circumstances leading to a delayed completion of the last update, it was not possible to include all the planned changes in the previous update (Version 2.2). With this new update, we will implement many of these changes, including ones requested in the feedback received after the 2024 championships.

In particular, the deductions for incorrect positioning of coach and wheel will be moved to neutral deductions. To reduce the mounting pressure on the head judge, we will no longer require a head judge to have a fully fledged execution score for each gymnast, as having an estimate prepared should be enough for an experienced head judge to lead a judges’ meeting.

The categories for Artistic Impression will be reduced from seven to five categories worth 2 points each. To achieve this, the technical aspects of the music (formerly Category 1) will be moved to neutral deductions, while two of the existing categories will be assimilated into one with a slightly expanded description.

Finally, we have prepared a clarification of the Appendix description regarding how to start a straight-line routine. We are aware that the information on and definition of standing swings is currently hard to read and understand, and we will be working more on this in the future.

The Athletes’ Commission has been consulted on the planned changes and we have taken their advice into consideration when making a final decision about which changes to include now and which to defer until a later date.

On a related note, since we expect more updates in the near future, in particular when the new Straight-Line Catalogue is introduced, we have chosen to name each new version by the year it comes into effect, e.g. “Gym Wheel Code of Points 2026”. Corrections and minor changes that become necessary after publication will be named as versions 2026.1, 2026.2, 2027.1 and so on.

Kind Regards,

Your IRV Team
