transcript of statement, IRV President Henning Henningsen:

Dear wheel gymnasts,

The coronavirus is keeping the world in suspense. People are living in lockdown, training facilities are closed and countries have issued travel bans.

We thought we could wait until the end of April to make a decision about the World Championships due to take place in New Jersey in July this year. As it turns out, with the virus progressing so fast and the situation changing by the hour, we do not have time to wait – we need to act now.

In close co-operation with the local organisers in the US, and with great sadness, we have made a joint decision to postpone the championships until summer 2021.

We know that this will be difficult for all of you who have already booked flights, registered for accommodation and made plans to travel to the US, to support the athletes in New Jersey. However, the health and safety of all participants is our highest priority, and given the current global pandemic, this was the only “right” decision we could make.

Our decision to postpone the World Championships will not affect our plans for the Team World Championships in May next year in Leipzig, Germany. This means that 2021 will be an exciting year with two major IRV events.

Questions & Answers

You will obviously have many questions as a result of this decision and we will try to summarize some (Q&A) later this week.

The local organisers are currently checking all options to minimise the financial burden for those who have already registered for accommodation.

In the meantime, you can use our social media channels or send us an email with any questions you have.

Yes, it is planned to have the World Championships – if possible – within the same time frame (12th to 17th July 2021). We will announce the new dates on our website and social media channels as soon as they are confirmed.

As an exception, the IRV has decided to permit gymnasts born in 2002 to compete in the junior category at the 2021 WC. However, the final decision lies with your country. Delegations can decide whether their gymnasts born in 2002 start in the junior or in the senior category. Maximum numbers of registered gymnasts per category must be respected.

For the WC 2021 this means:

All gymnasts born between 2002 and 2007 (including the years 2002 and 2007) will be allowed to compete in the Junior Category.

This is a question for the local organisers. They have published a letter for all participants, that have already registered.

Please see: Official Statement of USAWG; April 2, 2020

The decision about which teams are qualified is based on the teams’ results at the last World Championships in Magglingen 2018.

Qualified for the JUNIOR TEAM WC:

  1. Germany
  2. Israel
  3. the Netherlands
  4. Switzerland & Austria (joint 4th place)

Qualified for the SENIOR TEAM WC:

  1. Germany
  2. Japan
  3. Switzerland
  4. the Netherlands

The 2020 General Assembly will be held online as a video conference. We are aiming to find a date and timeframe that will suit all time zones from Japan to USA. It will probably take place on Sunday 12 July 2020. A final invitation with the confirmation of date, time and link to the online conference will be sent out as soon as possible.
